SUMMARY:Print Competiton 2025: Christmas Edition
DESCRIPTION:Full Competition details: \n\n\n11th of December 2025 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nCategories are: Open | Environmental Portrait \nClosing Date for Entries: 27th of November\nPresentation Night: 11th of December 2025 at the TTC Club Rooms\n\nEnvironmental Portrait Definition: \nAn environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject’s usual environment\, such as in their home or workplace\, and typically illuminates the subject’s life and surroundings. By photographing a person in their natural surroundings\, it is thought that you will be able to better illuminate their character\, and therefore portray the essence of their personality\, rather than merely a likeness of their physical features. It is also thought that by photographing a person in their natural surroundings\, the subject will be more at ease\, and so be more conducive to expressing themselves\, as opposed to in a studio\, which can be a rather intimidating and artificial experience. \nThe emphasis should be on creating a portrait that tells the viewer something personal about the subject: their job/hobby/passion/etc. The subject should be engaged\, that is they should know that they’re having their photograph taken. \n\n\n\nWhen submitting your prints please ensure: \n\n\nThe prints are adequately protected i.e. with card/portfolio/bubble wrap\nAll items submitted with the prints are named i.e. photo boxes\, cardboard etc. (these will be returned to you with your print)\n\n\nEntry Specifications: \n\n\nLimited to 2 images per member per category\nImages must not have been used in any previous Wellington Photographic Society competition\nEach image is to be entered into one category only\nYou must be a current financial member of the Society to enter\nMatting of entries is optional. Maximum mat side – 16” x 20” (406mm x 508mm). Not framed. If the image is not matted it is recommended that images are printed with a white border for display purposes.\nImage size – any size within the mat dimensions\nPlease note your Name\, Subject (Open\, Black and White)\, Title of the image and a contact number on the back of your print (In case we need to get it back to you afterwards)\n\n\nEntry Rules \n\n\nAll elements must be the work of (or have been created by) the photographer (entrant).\nThe use of stock photography\, computer-rendered or third-party content (including skies\, borders or textures) is prohibited.\nAll content and images must be from original exposures made within 24 months of the entry closing date. This includes all composite elements of an image\, such as backgrounds\, skies\, textures and borders.\nImages captured\, retouched\, digitally edited or printed over the duration of a workshop\, seminar\, tutorial\, or similar\, where the primary focus is for education\, are ineligible\, irrespective of whether it was under the direct instruction of the presenter or not. This rule only applies to attendees of workshops\, tutorials and educational/training events. Instructors\, students\, emerging members\, and attendees of photo-tours where the primary focus is not educational\, are not restricted. If you have any questions\, regarding the entry or the rules please let us know. SUMMARY:Annual Exhibition 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Wellington Photographic Society’s annual exhibition is a highlight of our year\, bringing together the creative work of our members and sharing it with the wider public. For us\, it’s not just a chance to hang photographs on the wall – it’s an opportunity to celebrate the art of photography\, showcase the talent within our community\, and invite others to discover what makes photography such an inspiring and accessible pursuit. \nThis year’s exhibition offers a diverse collection of images captured both close to home and further afield. You’ll see photographs from all around the world – landscapes\, portraits\, street scenes\, and wildlife – but the heart of the exhibition is firmly rooted in Wellington. Our members have drawn inspiration from the beauty and variety of our own backyard: dramatic coastlines\, majestic mountains\, vibrant cities\, and the small\, fleeting details that make life unique. \n \nWe are also proud to display images created during our group meet-ups\, workshops\, and learning sessions. These gatherings are at the heart of what we do as a society\, offering members the chance to connect\, experiment\, and grow their photographic skills in a supportive and friendly environment. The exhibition is therefore more than just a showcase of individual work – it’s a reflection of the shared learning\, encouragement\, and passion that our community thrives on. \nVisitors can expect to see a wide range of styles and techniques\, from classic black-and-white to bold digital artistry. Whether you are a seasoned photographer\, someone with a casual interest in the medium\, or simply curious to see the world through a different lens\, there will be something here to inspire you. \nOpening Night: 29th September\, 7pm (private event\, by invitation only)\nPublic Viewing: 30th September onwards\nOpening Hours: 10am – 6pm most days\, extended to 8pm on Friday/Saturday \nWe warmly invite you to join us\, explore the exhibition\, and experience the world as seen through the eyes of our members. Who knows – you may even feel inspired to pick up a camera yourself and consider becoming part of the Wellington Photographic Society. \nOpening night\nMonday\, 29 September | Time 7pm | Thistle Hall\, 293 Cuba St\, Te Aro\nPlease come and join us to celebrate the creative photos of your fellow club members and yourself – family and friends are welcome. SUMMARY:Phil Greig - Cinema\, Colour Grading & Digitisation
DESCRIPTION:Phil was born in Nelson\, New Zealand. Initially involved in arts\, music\, electronics and large scale stage productions he began his career in the Cinema Industry as a projectionist and technician. He moved on to work as a technical manager for some of New Zealands’ largest cinema chains before moving into the Film production industry in the late 1990’s. \nPhil had a number of years working for Oscar-winning Director/ Producer\, Peter Jackson as a Post Production film lab Technician\, Digital Intermediate specialist and projectionist before getting inspired to develop his own projects. Phil went on to develop R&D digital strategies\, working at the NZ film Archive. He now works full time as a producer\, film restorer/ editor and specialist audio and video digital technician\, in New Zealand’s vibrant film and entertainment industry. \nA New Zealand based professional photographer & Post Production technician. \nI started shooting weddings and doing modelling portfolios when I was 17. I lived in a small town & outgrew it quickly. Fortunately- I became a skilled cinema projectionist & with the sudden expansion of cinemas in the 90’s – along with my camera – I found myself moving around New Zealand – ending up in Wellington – just as ‘Lord of the Rings’ began production. \nAfter projecting over 20 thousand films – I took a leap of faith- & found myself working in the studios projection rooms and cutting takes on Hollywood films. I eventually became a VFX supervisor in an Oscar-winning team & an expert 35mm film colorist. \nBut I often used to say to people- I’m only good at this- because I learnt to take photos and develop them myself when I was 15. Every principal I was using – came from the camera lens or the dark room- experimenting over and over until I got it right. \nI noticed that the film industry was affecting (& improving) the way I was taking photos. Cinema requires drama or some sort of language in every frame. I felt the same should be applied to my photographs. While continuing to ‘Master Movies’ in my world class editing suite- I needed to separate my love of photography – and give it room to breathe on its own. \nIn 2017 I came up with the idea to create ‘PhilmHaus’ & the business was launched in early 2019.

SUMMARY:Astrophotography for beginners with Keith Molloy
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting a tutorial on astrophotography. This will be run by the local astrophotographer Keith Molloy. \nThe cost will be $80 for members of the general public and $60 for Wellington Photographic Society members. Numbers are limited to 35 so get in quick. \nThe format for the day will be an indoor tutorial run by Keith followed by a practical session on the south coast that evening. The level will be targeted at both beginners and those looking to improve their skills. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about astrophotography. \nWe will have an alternate day for the practical session if the weather is not playing ball on the day. \nIf you want to know more about Keith then here is some information: \nI first took up photography about 30 years ago but became interested in astrophotography about 7 years ago. \nI enjoy photographing the Wellington region at night but I also get out to shoot the dark skies in the Wairarapa and further afield whenever I can. I love finding new interesting foregrounds to feature along with the night skies. \nI set up the Wellington Night Shooters Facebook group in 2021 which runs night photography meetups throughout the year and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. I also sell astrophotography via my own website and other photography work on Truestock. \nFind examples of Keith’s work at:\ninstagram.com/keithmolloy_photography\nfacebook.com/keithmolloyphotography

SUMMARY:Interclub Print Battle 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Interclub Print Battle hosted by the Wellington Photographic Society. November 17th\, Doors open 12pm\, at the Tararua Tramping Club\, 4 Moncrieff St\, Mount Cook\, Wellington. \nThe Wellington Interclub Print Battle is an annual competition between the photographic clubs in the greater Wellington area that are affiliated to the Photographic Society of New Zealand. In the last couple of years\, an invitation has been extended to clubs further afield\, to boost the number of clubs participating. \n \nThe clubs participating in the 2024 competition are: \n\nWellington Photographic Society\nJohnsonville Camera Club\nPorirua Photography Club\nKapiti Coast Photographic Society\nWhanganui Camera Club\n\nHere are the topics for 2024.\nWe are happy to provide definitions of any subjects \n\nMinimalist\nTeal & Orange\nReflective\nMultiple Exposure\nConservation\nPareidolia: Seeing faces in Nature/Built Environment\nIn Miniature\nSuper Ordinary Life\nThe Sea\nShapes & Patterns\n\nThe competition has ten rounds\, each with a different topic. The participating clubs are asked to select one image for each topic from the work of their members to be their entry for that round. \nFor each round\, each club brings up their image for that topic and places it on the print stand for judging. The judge is asked to give a brief comment about each image and then rank the entries in order. The first placed print is awarded one point\, the second placed print is awarded two points\, and so on. At the end of the competition\, the club with the lowest cumulative score over the ten rounds is declared the winner and is presented with a trophy\, which was donated by the Kapiti Coast Photographic Society in 2008. \nThere is also the Stella Daniell Award presented to the individual photographer for the best abstract image across all the rounds\, as selected by the judge. The award is named in memory of Stella Daniell\, who was a member of both the Wellington Photographic Society and the Karori Camera Club and was known for her abstract images. \nWhere do you send submissions? comms@wps.org.nz\nWhat’s the deadline? October 24th 2024. This will give us time to select\, notify successful entrants\, format\, request alterations\, print\, and matt. \nWhat are the dimensions/size? \n\nFor the purposes of selection\, please send digital images only but let us know if you have a print/matted version of the image available.\n6mb Max at full resolution. We will resize the image to the size required for the competition but we will let you know if you need to bump up the resolution.\n\nNaming the image file? \n\nThis is VERY IMPORTANT. We receive lots of photos for different competitions and projects. This helps us keep things organised.\nInterclub_Category_LastNameFirstName_Title\nI.e.Interclub_TheSea_BobJohn_OhNoABear\n\nWe advise avoiding sending any images from recent workshops\, PSNZ or otherwise. If you are a member of another Camera Club\, please make sure that the images that you submit to WPS have not been submitted to other clubs for their Interclub entry. \nGood Luck and Have Fun! \nNovember 17th\, doors open 12pm\, at the Tararua Tramping Club\, 4 Moncrieff St\, Mt Victoria.
