SUMMARY:Annual Exhibition 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Wellington Photographic Society’s annual exhibition is a highlight of our year\, bringing together the creative work of our members and sharing it with the wider public. For us\, it’s not just a chance to hang photographs on the wall – it’s an opportunity to celebrate the art of photography\, showcase the talent within our community\, and invite others to discover what makes photography such an inspiring and accessible pursuit. \nThis year’s exhibition offers a diverse collection of images captured both close to home and further afield. You’ll see photographs from all around the world – landscapes\, portraits\, street scenes\, and wildlife – but the heart of the exhibition is firmly rooted in Wellington. Our members have drawn inspiration from the beauty and variety of our own backyard: dramatic coastlines\, majestic mountains\, vibrant cities\, and the small\, fleeting details that make life unique. \n \nWe are also proud to display images created during our group meet-ups\, workshops\, and learning sessions. These gatherings are at the heart of what we do as a society\, offering members the chance to connect\, experiment\, and grow their photographic skills in a supportive and friendly environment. The exhibition is therefore more than just a showcase of individual work – it’s a reflection of the shared learning\, encouragement\, and passion that our community thrives on. \nVisitors can expect to see a wide range of styles and techniques\, from classic black-and-white to bold digital artistry. Whether you are a seasoned photographer\, someone with a casual interest in the medium\, or simply curious to see the world through a different lens\, there will be something here to inspire you. \nOpening Night: 29th September\, 7pm (private event\, by invitation only)\nPublic Viewing: 30th September onwards\nOpening Hours: 10am – 6pm most days\, extended to 8pm on Friday/Saturday \nWe warmly invite you to join us\, explore the exhibition\, and experience the world as seen through the eyes of our members. Who knows – you may even feel inspired to pick up a camera yourself and consider becoming part of the Wellington Photographic Society. \nOpening night\nMonday\, 29 September | Time 7pm | Thistle Hall\, 293 Cuba St\, Te Aro\nPlease come and join us to celebrate the creative photos of your fellow club members and yourself – family and friends are welcome. Finger food and refreshments will be available. \nGallery roster\nWe are looking to establish a roster of volunteers to man the gallery during weekday afternoons and during the weekends. Please contact the committee via comms@wps.org.nz if you can volunteer.

SUMMARY:Print Competiton 2025: Christmas Edition
DESCRIPTION:Full Competition details: \n\n\n11th of December 2025 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nCategories are: Open | Environmental Portrait \nClosing Date for Entries: 27th of November\nPresentation Night: 11th of December 2025 at the TTC Club Rooms\n\nEnvironmental Portrait Definition: \nAn environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject’s usual environment\, such as in their home or workplace\, and typically illuminates the subject’s life and surroundings. By photographing a person in their natural surroundings\, it is thought that you will be able to better illuminate their character\, and therefore portray the essence of their personality\, rather than merely a likeness of their physical features. It is also thought that by photographing a person in their natural surroundings\, the subject will be more at ease\, and so be more conducive to expressing themselves\, as opposed to in a studio\, which can be a rather intimidating and artificial experience. \nThe emphasis should be on creating a portrait that tells the viewer something personal about the subject: their job/hobby/passion/etc. The subject should be engaged\, that is they should know that they’re having their photograph taken. \n\n\n\nWhen submitting your prints please ensure: \n\n\nThe prints are adequately protected i.e. with card/portfolio/bubble wrap\nAll items submitted with the prints are named i.e. photo boxes\, cardboard etc. (these will be returned to you with your print)\n\n\nEntry Specifications: \n\n\nLimited to 2 images per member per category\nImages must not have been used in any previous Wellington Photographic Society competition\nEach image is to be entered into one category only\nYou must be a current financial member of the Society to enter\nMatting of entries is optional. Maximum mat side – 16” x 20” (406mm x 508mm). Not framed. If the image is not matted it is recommended that images are printed with a white border for display purposes.\nImage size – any size within the mat dimensions\nPlease note your Name\, Subject (Open\, Black and White)\, Title of the image and a contact number on the back of your print (In case we need to get it back to you afterwards)\n\n\nEntry Rules \n\n\nAll elements must be the work of (or have been created by) the photographer (entrant).\nThe use of stock photography\, computer-rendered or third-party content (including skies\, borders or textures) is prohibited.\nAll content and images must be from original exposures made within 24 months of the entry closing date. This includes all composite elements of an image\, such as backgrounds\, skies\, textures and borders.\nImages captured\, retouched\, digitally edited or printed over the duration of a workshop\, seminar\, tutorial\, or similar\, where the primary focus is for education\, are ineligible\, irrespective of whether it was under the direct instruction of the presenter or not. This rule only applies to attendees of workshops\, tutorials and educational/training events. Instructors\, students\, emerging members\, and attendees of photo-tours where the primary focus is not educational\, are not restricted. If you have any questions\, regarding the entry or the rules please let us know. Exemptions may be granted in cases of sickness/extenuating circumstances (This will be on a case-by-case basis)\n\n\nAnnual Print Competition: Drop Off\n\n\n\nDrops off can be arranged by email at comms@wps.org.nz

SUMMARY:Image Critique: Bring your own print
DESCRIPTION:Do you have any photographs that you would like feedback on? Or maybe you just can’t put your finger on what might make the image better? \nYou may bring in up to five photographs for critique; they can be possible competition entries or anything else you want input on. This is a great chance to run your work past others for feedback on how you can improve\, and to discuss your work with other photographers at the end of the evening. \nYou can bring digital photos on your own device or physical prints. If bringing prints we suggest at least 8×12 size so that people can view details. The images do not need to be mounted or framed\, but can be. Feedback will be anonymous during the critique and there will be an opportunity later in the evening to discuss your image with others if you would like to. \nYou can have up to five photographs per person in print or on a device (laptop or tablet). You don’t need to bring any photographs to take part\, you’re more than welcome to simply provide feedback to others or simply catch-up with other photographers. \nDon’t be afraid to participate – you do not need to be a member to take part in this meeting\, whether receiving feedback or just providing some. \nIf you are unable to bring along a digital copy on your own device\, then email your images to comms@wps.org.nz and we will put your image on the projector. We cannot guarantee feedback for these images\, but we will do our best. \nMembers of the public are welcome to attend\, tea and biscuits will be provided. \n\nDate: Thursday 9th July\nTime: Doors open from 7pm\, critique will begin at 7.30pm\nLocation: 4 Moncrieff Street\, Mt Victoria\n\nDigital Copies \nFor those wanting to bring digital images rather than prints on Thursday. In order to be able to critique digital images\, we will need each person to set up their images in a folder on their device. The other members will view the images on that device. \nEach image will need to be titled – just numbers are fine as we just need to be able to identify each one for the feedback. Having the images in a separate folder means people can switch between just those images easily. You are also welcome to set up a slideshow or similar (please allow enough time for each image to be fully digested).

SUMMARY:PSNZ honours - Members present their sets
DESCRIPTION:Following a presentation by Peter Rodgers introducing the Photographic Society of New Zealand’s system of honours with its three levels\, Licentiate (LPSNZ)\, Associateship (APSNZ) and Fellowship (FPSNZ)\, four of our members will present sets they submitted for one of these honours\, showing us examples of both successful sets and unsuccessful sets. First\, Donna Jennings will show us her successful LPSNZ set. Next Rick Spencer will show us his unsuccessful APSNZ set and talk about his approach for another attempt next year. Then Peter Rodgers will show us his unsuccessful APSNZ set from last year and talk about the changes he made to be successful on a second go this year. And finally Mark Berger will present his successful FPSNZ set from this year. If you are thinking about going for your honours\, hearing how these four members prepared their sets and the feedback they got for their unsuccessful attempts will be valuable input for you in putting together your own set. \nThursday 28 May\, 7pm doors open\, 7:30pm presentations start\, Tararua Tramping Club\, free entry for members of the public\, koha welcome but not compulsory.
