SUMMARY:Interclub Print Battle 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Interclub Print Battle hosted by the Wellington Photographic Society. November 17th\, Doors open 12pm\, at the Tararua Tramping Club\, 4 Moncrieff St\, Mount Cook\, Wellington. \nThe Wellington Interclub Print Battle is an annual competition between the photographic clubs in the greater Wellington area that are affiliated to the Photographic Society of New Zealand. In the last couple of years\, an invitation has been extended to clubs further afield\, to boost the number of clubs participating. \n \nThe clubs participating in the 2024 competition are: \n\nWellington Photographic Society\nJohnsonville Camera Club\nPorirua Photography Club\nKapiti Coast Photographic Society\nWhanganui Camera Club\n\nHere are the topics for 2024.\nWe are happy to provide definitions of any subjects \n\nMinimalist\nTeal & Orange\nReflective\nMultiple Exposure\nConservation\nPareidolia: Seeing faces in Nature/Built Environment\nIn Miniature\nSuper Ordinary Life\nThe Sea\nShapes & Patterns\n\nThe competition has ten rounds\, each with a different topic. The participating clubs are asked to select one image for each topic from the work of their members to be their entry for that round. \nFor each round\, each club brings up their image for that topic and places it on the print stand for judging. The judge is asked to give a brief comment about each image and then rank the entries in order. The first placed print is awarded one point\, the second placed print is awarded two points\, and so on. At the end of the competition\, the club with the lowest cumulative score over the ten rounds is declared the winner and is presented with a trophy\, which was donated by the Kapiti Coast Photographic Society in 2008. \nThere is also the Stella Daniell Award presented to the individual photographer for the best abstract image across all the rounds\, as selected by the judge. The award is named in memory of Stella Daniell\, who was a member of both the Wellington Photographic Society and the Karori Camera Club and was known for her abstract images. \nWhere do you send submissions? comms@wps.org.nz\nWhat’s the deadline? October 24th 2024. This will give us time to select\, notify successful entrants\, format\, request alterations\, print\, and matt. \nWhat are the dimensions/size? \n\nFor the purposes of selection\, please send digital images only but let us know if you have a print/matted version of the image available.\n6mb Max at full resolution. We will resize the image to the size required for the competition but we will let you know if you need to bump up the resolution.\n\nNaming the image file? \n\nThis is VERY IMPORTANT. We receive lots of photos for different competitions and projects. This helps us keep things organised.\nInterclub_Category_LastNameFirstName_Title\nI.e.Interclub_TheSea_BobJohn_OhNoABear\n\nWe advise avoiding sending any images from recent workshops\, PSNZ or otherwise. If you are a member of another Camera Club\, please make sure that the images that you submit to WPS have not been submitted to other clubs for their Interclub entry. \nGood Luck and Have Fun! \nNovember 17th\, doors open 12pm\, at the Tararua Tramping Club\, 4 Moncrieff St\, Mt Victoria.

SUMMARY:Lee - Private Screening
DESCRIPTION:We are hosting a private screening at Penthouse Cinema of the movie Lee\, which is all about WW2 Photographer Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller.\n\nThursday 14th November 7.30pm – Penthouse Cinema Brooklyn\nLimited to 30 people. Tickets are $10\n\nTicket Link:https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/…/lee-private-screening…\n\nAbout the movie:\nStarring Kate Winslet\, Marion Cotilliard\, Alexander Skarsgard. New Yorker Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller was a model for Vogue and Vanity Fair but then moved to Paris to study photography. She moved to London just as WW2 broke out and as a middle-aged woman she refused to simply be remembered as a model and muse.\nInstead\, she defied social expectations and travelled Europe\, reporting from the frontline\, and covering events such as the London Blitz\, the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps at Dachau and Buchenwald.\nHer work was shown in British Vogue and the terrible images she captured changed perceptions of the war and brought home the atrocities of the concentration camps. Her work changed war photography forever\, but Lee paid a huge personal price for the stories she fought so hard to tell.

SUMMARY:James Gilberd (Photospace Gallery) - Curating an Image Selection
DESCRIPTION:The talk is all about curating a selection of images for your own exhibitions and photobooks. James has decades of experience in this area and should have some great insights for everyone. \nJames Gilberd opened Photospace Gallery in December 1998 and has hosted hundreds of exhibitions of photography since then\, mainly by NZ-based photographers. \nThe gallery is propped up financially by his professional photography work\, which includes running courses and workshops\, photo studio and darkroom hire\, commercial photography\, and taking nice-looking passport photos. He studied photography at Wellington Polytech in 1987 and went back there to do a photography degree in the early 1990s. \nThursday 26 September | Doors open 7pm | Tararua Tramping Club\nMembers of the public are welcome to attend

SUMMARY:Bring a Print - Feedback and Critique Evening
DESCRIPTION:Do you have any photographs that you would like feedback on? Or maybe you just can’t put your finger on what might make the image better? \nThis is a great chance to discuss your work with other photographers or to run your work past others for feedback on how you can improve. You may bring in up to five photographs for consideration; they can be possible competition entries or anything else you want input on. \nYou can bring digital photos or physical prints (we suggest at least 8×12 size so that people can view details\, images do not need to be mounted or framed\, but can be). Feedback will be anonymous during the critique and there will be an opportunity later in the evening to discuss your image with others if you would like to. \nYou can have up to five photographs per person in print or on a device (laptop or tablet). You don’t need to bring any photographs to take part\, you’re more than welcome to simply provide feedback to others or simply catch-up with other photographers. \nDon’t be afraid to participate. Everyone has to start somewhere\, and receiving feedback is a great way to improve.\nMembers of the public are welcome to attend \n  \n

SUMMARY:Film Night - Jos
DESCRIPTION:The Forgotten Photographer Who Saved A Town\nFor nearly 100 years the name Jos Divis was missing from histories of New Zealand photography. Now a wrong is being righted. \nSome call him the ‘inventor of the selfie’. A street photographer ahead of his time\, he pioneered techniques to capture images of ordinary people and their working lives in a way no-one else could. SUMMARY:Meetup: Zealandia
DESCRIPTION:Tucked up over the city of Wellington is Zealandia\, an ecosanctuary reminiscent of the days before humans arrived in New Zealand. \nZealandia is a great place to photograph more than just birds – there are invertebrates\, plants\, fungi\, and tuatara too (so you don’t need a huge long lens if you don’t have one). \nComing into autumn\, the sanctuary residents are gearing up for winter\, so we should be able to find plenty of birds looking for food. \nMeetup time and place:\nWe will meet in the foyer at 9am on Saturday 27th April. \nKeep in mind\, we do not have an official Zealandia guide for this meet-up\, but we do have a staff member who knows the sanctuary quite well  \nPlease RSVP to this meet-up as we need to determine if we have enough Zealandia members attending to get everyone in at half-price. Please indicate if you are a Zealandia member when RSVP’ing. \nRSVP Link:\nhttps://forms.gle/3DDYNSAkrbXmkSNZ8

SUMMARY:Clive Pigott - Alternative Printing Processes
DESCRIPTION:Clive Pigott – Alternative Printing Processes. Thursday 11th April\, Tararua Tramping Club\, 7pm \nAbout Clive:\nI’ve been making photographs since I was 12. I’m now 58. \nI am not a naturally talented photographer. My eye didn’t really improve until I was in my 40’s and only after I had adopted digital. Until then successful images were hit and miss. \nI’d say generally my images are simple but deliberate. I aim to have enough in them for the viewer to take a longer look (but then don’t we all want that?). \nI’d probably say I’ve been on a journey with photography over the years. It has definitely\, been a journey of great fun and reward\, as I have got better at converting my images into prints using alternative processes: Cyanotype (with/without botanical toning)\, 4-colour Gum bichromate\, and Anthotype. \nIn my talk I’ll tell you about these processes and why I like them\, I’ll show you some of the successes and failures (and hence why it is still a journey)\, and I’ll give you some tips for getting started.
