SUMMARY:Annual Exhibition 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Wellington Photographic Society’s annual exhibition is a highlight of our year\, bringing together the creative work of our members and sharing it with the wider public. For us\, it’s not just a chance to hang photographs on the wall – it’s an opportunity to celebrate the art of photography\, showcase the talent within our community\, and invite others to discover what makes photography such an inspiring and accessible pursuit. \nThis year’s exhibition offers a diverse collection of images captured both close to home and further afield. You’ll see photographs from all around the world – landscapes\, portraits\, street scenes\, and wildlife – but the heart of the exhibition is firmly rooted in Wellington. Our members have drawn inspiration from the beauty and variety of our own backyard: dramatic coastlines\, majestic mountains\, vibrant cities\, and the small\, fleeting details that make life unique. \n \nWe are also proud to display images created during our group meet-ups\, workshops\, and learning sessions. These gatherings are at the heart of what we do as a society\, offering members the chance to connect\, experiment\, and grow their photographic skills in a supportive and friendly environment. The exhibition is therefore more than just a showcase of individual work – it’s a reflection of the shared learning\, encouragement\, and passion that our community thrives on. \nVisitors can expect to see a wide range of styles and techniques\, from classic black-and-white to bold digital artistry. Whether you are a seasoned photographer\, someone with a casual interest in the medium\, or simply curious to see the world through a different lens\, there will be something here to inspire you. \nOpening Night: 29th September\, 7pm (private event\, by invitation only)\nPublic Viewing: 30th September onwards\nOpening Hours: 10am – 6pm most days\, extended to 8pm on Friday/Saturday \nWe warmly invite you to join us\, explore the exhibition\, and experience the world as seen through the eyes of our members. Who knows – you may even feel inspired to pick up a camera yourself and consider becoming part of the Wellington Photographic Society. \nOpening night\nMonday\, 29 September | Time 7pm | Thistle Hall\, 293 Cuba St\, Te Aro\nPlease come and join us to celebrate the creative photos of your fellow club members and yourself – family and friends are welcome. Finger food and refreshments will be available. \nGallery roster\nWe are looking to establish a roster of volunteers to man the gallery during weekday afternoons and during the weekends. Please contact the committee via comms@wps.org.nz if you can volunteer.

SUMMARY:Jonathan Kay - Massey University Lecturer/Master of Fine Arts Coordinator
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Kay is a photographic artist\, researcher\, and lecturer based at Massey University in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington. His work explores the intersection of art and science\, using photography to reveal the unseen and challenge conventional notions of landscape. Over the past seven years\, his research has focused on developing a site-specific and responsive approach to photographic interventions within the landscape. \nDrawing inspiration from scientific ‘fieldwork\,’ Kay’s practice involves close observation and data collection\, using these methods to uncover new insights into specific environments. However\, his approach extends beyond the typical scientific framework by leveraging the unique possibilities of the photographic medium. This process enables him to move beyond the traditional\, idealized representation of landscapes\, offering deeper\, more complex interpretations. \nSeptember 25\, Tararua Tramping Club (4 Moncrieff St\, Mt Victoria)\, Doors Open at 7pm \nIf you’re curious about the Wellington Photographic Society\, you’re welcome to attend two meetings for free before deciding whether to join. SUMMARY:Phil Greig - Cinema\, Colour Grading & Digitisation
DESCRIPTION:Phil was born in Nelson\, New Zealand. Initially involved in arts\, music\, electronics and large scale stage productions he began his career in the Cinema Industry as a projectionist and technician. He moved on to work as a technical manager for some of New Zealands’ largest cinema chains before moving into the Film production industry in the late 1990’s. \nPhil had a number of years working for Oscar-winning Director/ Producer\, Peter Jackson as a Post Production film lab Technician\, Digital Intermediate specialist and projectionist before getting inspired to develop his own projects. Phil went on to develop R&D digital strategies\, working at the NZ film Archive. He now works full time as a producer\, film restorer/ editor and specialist audio and video digital technician\, in New Zealand’s vibrant film and entertainment industry. \nA New Zealand based professional photographer & Post Production technician. \nI started shooting weddings and doing modelling portfolios when I was 17. I lived in a small town & outgrew it quickly. Fortunately- I became a skilled cinema projectionist & with the sudden expansion of cinemas in the 90’s – along with my camera – I found myself moving around New Zealand – ending up in Wellington – just as ‘Lord of the Rings’ began production. \nAfter projecting over 20 thousand films – I took a leap of faith- & found myself working in the studios projection rooms and cutting takes on Hollywood films. I eventually became a VFX supervisor in an Oscar-winning team & an expert 35mm film colorist. \nBut I often used to say to people- I’m only good at this- because I learnt to take photos and develop them myself when I was 15. Every principal I was using – came from the camera lens or the dark room- experimenting over and over until I got it right. \nI noticed that the film industry was affecting (& improving) the way I was taking photos. Cinema requires drama or some sort of language in every frame. I felt the same should be applied to my photographs. While continuing to ‘Master Movies’ in my world class editing suite- I needed to separate my love of photography – and give it room to breathe on its own. \nIn 2017 I came up with the idea to create ‘PhilmHaus’ & the business was launched in early 2019.

SUMMARY:Astrophotography for beginners with Keith Molloy
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting a tutorial on astrophotography. This will be run by the local astrophotographer Keith Molloy. \nThe cost will be $80 for members of the general public and $60 for Wellington Photographic Society members. Numbers are limited to 35 so get in quick. \nThe format for the day will be an indoor tutorial run by Keith followed by a practical session on the south coast that evening. The level will be targeted at both beginners and those looking to improve their skills. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about astrophotography. \nWe will have an alternate day for the practical session if the weather is not playing ball on the day. \nIf you want to know more about Keith then here is some information: \nI first took up photography about 30 years ago but became interested in astrophotography about 7 years ago. \nI enjoy photographing the Wellington region at night but I also get out to shoot the dark skies in the Wairarapa and further afield whenever I can. I love finding new interesting foregrounds to feature along with the night skies. \nI set up the Wellington Night Shooters Facebook group in 2021 which runs night photography meetups throughout the year and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. I also sell astrophotography via my own website and other photography work on Truestock. \nFind examples of Keith’s work at:\ninstagram.com/keithmolloy_photography\nfacebook.com/keithmolloyphotography

SUMMARY:Lee - Private Screening
DESCRIPTION:We are hosting a private screening at Penthouse Cinema of the movie Lee\, which is all about WW2 Photographer Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller.\n\nThursday 14th November 7.30pm – Penthouse Cinema Brooklyn\nLimited to 30 people. Tickets are $10\n\nTicket Link:https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/…/lee-private-screening…\n\nAbout the movie:\nStarring Kate Winslet\, Marion Cotilliard\, Alexander Skarsgard. New Yorker Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller was a model for Vogue and Vanity Fair but then moved to Paris to study photography. She moved to London just as WW2 broke out and as a middle-aged woman she refused to simply be remembered as a model and muse.\nInstead\, she defied social expectations and travelled Europe\, reporting from the frontline\, and covering events such as the London Blitz\, the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps at Dachau and Buchenwald.\nHer work was shown in British Vogue and the terrible images she captured changed perceptions of the war and brought home the atrocities of the concentration camps. Her work changed war photography forever\, but Lee paid a huge personal price for the stories she fought so hard to tell.
