SUMMARY:Simon Woolf - Wellington Moods
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to welcome Simon Woolf\, as our special guest speaker at the next Wellington Photographic Society meeting. \nSimon is one of New Zealand’s most respected and experienced photographers — he has earned multiple national and international qualifications and awards\, and has exhibited and judged widely both in Aotearoa and overseas. Simon’s lifelong dedication to photography has also seen him play significant roles in photographic organisations and education in New Zealand. \nPhotography is in Simon’s blood. He carries on the family legacy begun by his father\, Ronald Woolf\, who acquired one of Wellington’s oldest photographic studios (originally Spencer Digby\, established 1934) in 1960 and built it into one of the capital’s best-known and most esteemed businesses. Over decades\, Ron’s work — and now Simon’s continuing vision — has documented countless people\, places\, and milestones throughout Wellington and beyond. \nSimon also has a long and special history with the Wellington Photographic Society\, holding Life Membership\, and engaging with the club through presentations\, workshops\, and judging over many years. \nHis latest project is his beautiful new photography book\, Wellington Moods — a curated collection of his favourite black-and-white images celebrating the city’s character\, light\, landscapes\, and people. The book captures Wellington in all its moods. \nPlease join us for what promises to be an inspiring evening as Simon shares his passion\, stories\, and photographic insight. \nThursday March 12th\, Tararua Tramping Club\, 4 Moncrieff St\, Doors open 7pm\, Members of the public are welcome to attend. Koha appreciated but not complusory.

SUMMARY:Print Competiton 2025: Christmas Edition
DESCRIPTION:Full Competition details: \n\n\n11th of December 2025 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nCategories are: Open | Environmental Portrait \nClosing Date for Entries: 27th of November\nPresentation Night: 11th of December 2025 at the TTC Club Rooms\n\nEnvironmental Portrait Definition: \nAn environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject’s usual environment\, such as in their home or workplace\, and typically illuminates the subject’s life and surroundings. By photographing a person in their natural surroundings\, it is thought that you will be able to better illuminate their character\, and therefore portray the essence of their personality\, rather than merely a likeness of their physical features. It is also thought that by photographing a person in their natural surroundings\, the subject will be more at ease\, and so be more conducive to expressing themselves\, as opposed to in a studio\, which can be a rather intimidating and artificial experience. \nThe emphasis should be on creating a portrait that tells the viewer something personal about the subject: their job/hobby/passion/etc. The subject should be engaged\, that is they should know that they’re having their photograph taken. \n\n\n\nWhen submitting your prints please ensure: \n\n\nThe prints are adequately protected i.e. with card/portfolio/bubble wrap\nAll items submitted with the prints are named i.e. photo boxes\, cardboard etc. (these will be returned to you with your print)\n\n\nEntry Specifications: \n\n\nLimited to 2 images per member per category\nImages must not have been used in any previous Wellington Photographic Society competition\nEach image is to be entered into one category only\nYou must be a current financial member of the Society to enter\nMatting of entries is optional. Maximum mat side – 16” x 20” (406mm x 508mm). Not framed. If the image is not matted it is recommended that images are printed with a white border for display purposes.\nImage size – any size within the mat dimensions\nPlease note your Name\, Subject (Open\, Black and White)\, Title of the image and a contact number on the back of your print (In case we need to get it back to you afterwards)\n\n\nEntry Rules \n\n\nAll elements must be the work of (or have been created by) the photographer (entrant).\nThe use of stock photography\, computer-rendered or third-party content (including skies\, borders or textures) is prohibited.\nAll content and images must be from original exposures made within 24 months of the entry closing date. This includes all composite elements of an image\, such as backgrounds\, skies\, textures and borders.\nImages captured\, retouched\, digitally edited or printed over the duration of a workshop\, seminar\, tutorial\, or similar\, where the primary focus is for education\, are ineligible\, irrespective of whether it was under the direct instruction of the presenter or not. This rule only applies to attendees of workshops\, tutorials and educational/training events. SUMMARY:Lizzie Bisley – What we can learn from painters
DESCRIPTION:Lizzie Bisley – What we can learn from painters \nWhat can we\, as photographers\, learn from painters? That is the question we have posed to Te Papa art curator Lizzie Bisley for a talk at this week’s meeting. For example\, how do painters think about composition\, how do painters use light\, and how have these have changed over various periods and movements? \nLizzie has an honours degree in art history from Victoria University and has also studied at the Royal College of Art in London\, after which she worked as a curator at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Lizzie returned to Wellington in 2019 and is now the Curator Modern Art at Te Papa. \nNovember 13\, Tararua Tramping Clubs\, Doors open from 7pm

SUMMARY:Annual Exhibition 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Wellington Photographic Society’s annual exhibition is a highlight of our year\, bringing together the creative work of our members and sharing it with the wider public. For us\, it’s not just a chance to hang photographs on the wall – it’s an opportunity to celebrate the art of photography\, showcase the talent within our community\, and invite others to discover what makes photography such an inspiring and accessible pursuit. \nThis year’s exhibition offers a diverse collection of images captured both close to home and further afield. You’ll see photographs from all around the world – landscapes\, portraits\, street scenes\, and wildlife – but the heart of the exhibition is firmly rooted in Wellington. Our members have drawn inspiration from the beauty and variety of our own backyard: dramatic coastlines\, majestic mountains\, vibrant cities\, and the small\, fleeting details that make life unique. \n \nWe are also proud to display images created during our group meet-ups\, workshops\, and learning sessions. These gatherings are at the heart of what we do as a society\, offering members the chance to connect\, experiment\, and grow their photographic skills in a supportive and friendly environment. The exhibition is therefore more than just a showcase of individual work – it’s a reflection of the shared learning\, encouragement\, and passion that our community thrives on. \nVisitors can expect to see a wide range of styles and techniques\, from classic black-and-white to bold digital artistry. Whether you are a seasoned photographer\, someone with a casual interest in the medium\, or simply curious to see the world through a different lens\, there will be something here to inspire you. \nOpening Night: 29th September\, 7pm (private event\, by invitation only)\nPublic Viewing: 30th September onwards\nOpening Hours: 10am – 6pm most days\, extended to 8pm on Friday/Saturday \nWe warmly invite you to join us\, explore the exhibition\, and experience the world as seen through the eyes of our members. Who knows – you may even feel inspired to pick up a camera yourself and consider becoming part of the Wellington Photographic Society. \nOpening night\nMonday\, 29 September | Time 7pm | Thistle Hall\, 293 Cuba St\, Te Aro\nPlease come and join us to celebrate the creative photos of your fellow club members and yourself – family and friends are welcome. Finger food and refreshments will be available. \nGallery roster\nWe are looking to establish a roster of volunteers to man the gallery during weekday afternoons and during the weekends. SUMMARY:Jonathan Kay - Massey University Lecturer/Master of Fine Arts Coordinator
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Kay is a photographic artist\, researcher\, and lecturer based at Massey University in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington. His work explores the intersection of art and science\, using photography to reveal the unseen and challenge conventional notions of landscape. Over the past seven years\, his research has focused on developing a site-specific and responsive approach to photographic interventions within the landscape. \nDrawing inspiration from scientific ‘fieldwork\,’ Kay’s practice involves close observation and data collection\, using these methods to uncover new insights into specific environments. However\, his approach extends beyond the typical scientific framework by leveraging the unique possibilities of the photographic medium. This process enables him to move beyond the traditional\, idealized representation of landscapes\, offering deeper\, more complex interpretations. \nSeptember 25\, Tararua Tramping Club (4 Moncrieff St\, Mt Victoria)\, Doors Open at 7pm \nIf you’re curious about the Wellington Photographic Society\, you’re welcome to attend two meetings for free before deciding whether to join.
