SUMMARY:Exploring Documentary Photography with Mark Coote
DESCRIPTION:About Mark:\nI have been earning my living as a photographer for 30 years. I started out working on newspapers and then like all journalists eventually do\, I went to the dark side.I do commercial work now\, mainly in the Communications space. Each assignment or photoshoot has a brief. It can be highly prescriptive and is always challenging. It is virtually never documentary. \n\n\nBut what is documentary photography? And how much of the work in my newspaper days was actually documentary? \nI will show a range of images\, both commissioned and personal with the focus being on documentary work. \nYou can see more of Mark’s work here:\nhttp://www.markcoote.com \n\n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/markcootephotographer/ \n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Bubbles of Paekakariki: Bob Zuur
DESCRIPTION:“I am a people and places photographer from Paekakariki. I was the school photographer at high school taking photos for the school newspaper and magazines. I was diverted into being a marine biologist for much my career\, but a few years ago I decided to make my photographic passion into my job. This can be a risky thing to do\, but the passion continues unabated! \n\nI love nature photography\, from macro through to landscape astrophotography. I enjoy people photography\, especially portraits of people in their environment. In these times of digital overload\, I consider that photographers have an important role in documenting this rapidly changing world in a way that lifts their photos above the chaff of cellphone images.\n\nSo when we entered into lockdown just over a year ago\, I felt it was important to record what this meant for my village of Paekakariki. I ended up photographing over 10% of the village in 55 “bubbles”. This led to two exhibitions and a book. And its about this project that I will speak.’ \n\nYou can see more of Bob’s work here:\nwww.momentsoflight.nz

SUMMARY:This event is now cancelled
DESCRIPTION:This event has now been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. \nRachael Smith – Using Photography as a method of healing & recovery \nThrough this work\, I have explored challenges that occurred in a relationship where the balance of power was unequal. \nThis autobiographical body of work has come about through observing myself\, everyday routines\, environment and changes in my situation as though I am disembodied from the scene itself.  Using a digital camera to document my domestic  surroundings and observations I have been able to make images that reflect a certain time\, feeling or emotion. Digital files are downloaded\, processed and printed to create a final resolved image.  Studying these images in post-production offers a way for me to observe my own situation at a distance with new clarity of mind. \nThis methodology is a means of escape\, and of visual articulation for situations that I had not previously been able to discuss. Using a process of observational contemplation\, approached through the lens\, as an attempt to better understand my own situation. Images created during periods of emotional pressure – everyday subtleties that draw my eye. \n“The beauty of those places I soared over is with me still\, and in all my dreams as in my waking life was a love of place\, a sense that places were embodiments of emotions\, were anchors\, were companions of a sort\, even protectors or parents.” \nCheck out more of Racheal’s work here: \nRahera Photography\nwww.raheraphotography.com

SUMMARY:Karolina Stus: Fine Art & Expressive Photography
DESCRIPTION:My name is Karolina. I’m an independent fine art and portrait photographer\, shooting personal\, fashion and commercial portraits. I’m an enthusiastic and life-loving Polish woman\, living in Kāpiti\, New Zealand. Growing up without many material things in a country fighting communism\, we created memories that have warmed me over the years. \nI believe these experiences built the foundations for my soul\, and the way I look at the world today. \nMy passion for photography has evolved since my gorgeous family arrived in New Zealand in 2012. It soon became a creative outlet\, a way for me to tell stories. When we arrived here\, my older son was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. He understands the world more easily through images\, as words and language are something abstract to him – so we communicated using visual images. Since then I’ve totally fallen in love with photography. My fine art editorial approach creates timeless\, luminous and cinematic images. My goal as a portrait photographer is to look past the face we present\, to capture something deeper. Sometimes this results in a bright\, eye-catching image\, and sometimes a more poetic study of the face. I’m in love with everything that is old\, odd\, or different; I find these things beautiful. I transform these old things and give them new life. My house is full of these pieces. I connect strongly with this quote about the Japanese art of Kintsugi: \n“When the Japanese repair broken objects\, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when something has suffered damage and has a history\, it becomes more beautiful.” \nDuring my talk\, I will tell you about my journey to find my style. Why I decided to do something different and use my hands instead of photoshop. I will bring my pieces and explain how I made some of them. \nYou can check out Karolina’s incredible work here: https://karolinastus.pro/ \nIn the event that Level 2 is extended this event will go ahead with social distancing measures in place\, QR codes/visitor register\, and other safety procedures.

SUMMARY:Joshua Harvey - The Ways We Love
DESCRIPTION:In town early before the Wellington Pride Festival kicks-off on March 13th? \nJoin The Wellington Photographic Society on March 11th as we host emerging photographer Joshua Harvey. \nJoshua Harvey is a queer photographer\, working with portraiture to unpack issues surrounding identity\, relationships\, mental health and the idea of the self-image. Their work to date has focused on the ideas that the photographic lens can reveal a true nature but is more often than not used to capture a performative reality\, where one can set their own stage and play pretend. \nThey will be discussing their work with the queer community and their book “The Ways We Love” which unpacks relationships in a modern age in an effort to understand how we love one another and how this generation is affected by it\, particularly in regards to queer relationships. \n\n\nJoshua is a student at Massey’s College of Creative Arts\, studying with the Photography Department towards their Bachelor of Design. “The Ways We Love” premiered at Massey University’s 2020 Exposure Exhibition. \nThanks to Vivian Lyngdoh and The Wellington Pride Festival for their assistance. Please note this is not an official Pride Festival Event. \nIn the event that Level 2 is extended this event will go ahead with social distancing measures\, Tracer QR codes/visitor register\, and hand gel. Normal coffee/tea and biscuits will not be provided until Level 1 but feel free to bring your own non-alcoholic beverage.

SUMMARY:PSNZ Honours Club
DESCRIPTION:For those who attended our last meeting\, I mentioned that we will be starting a Honours Club.\n\nThe purpose of this club is to provide support and encouragement to WPS members who are interested in attaining one of the three levels of distinction awarded by the Photographic Society of New Zealand: Licentiate\, Associateship\, and Fellowship.\nFurther information\, including informative videos and portfolio examples\, can be found here: https://photography.org.nz/honours/psnz-honours/\n\nThe purpose of the awards is to encourage New Zealand Photographers to push their boundaries and grow their artistic and technical skills through an awards system not unlike what exists in the US\, UK\, Australia\, and Canada.\nAchieving an honours level also unlocks opportunities within the PSNZ such as judging for photographic competitions for other clubs.\nAt this stage\, we are starting the Honours Club for those trying for the first award\, Licentiate\, which is open to PSNZ and non-PSNZ members. Is there is enough interest in higher levels\, we’re more than happy to accommodate.\n\nThe first meeting will be this Wednesday\, March 10th at 5pm at the Tramping Club. It will be a quick meeting for people to discuss what they want out of the club and when they want to meet.\nHowever\, I am more than happy to host this meeting on ZOOM instead if there is greater interest in that. Please comment below if you prefer a ZOOM meet-up

SUMMARY:Andy Monk - Why the Rush!
DESCRIPTION:Analogue (film) photography around Wellington and the other main centers is an  untapped wellspring of talent and potentially\, a critical material and process to always  guarantee photography does not become a sub-genre of digital art. \nIt is the Feldenkrais principle where the photographer spends more time before  capture\, fine tuning or waiting for a moment – it is often a boundless experimentation  to capture an anomaly. Each film emulsion carries an individual expression of the  scene captured and combined \nPart of this aesthetic has become increasingly popular with new generation of casual  photographer as they suffer digital everything else\, pressured for time and challenging  themselves and peers for individual expression; film photography offers them all low  entry costs and authenticity that is absent in the automated filters ever present on  smartphones. \nThis is a quick look at the individualism of film photography on Wellington streets  and further afield. \nThurs 25th from 7pm – Tararua Tramping Club

SUMMARY:Mary Livingston – Our Sea\, Our Backyard
DESCRIPTION:Mary Livingston lives in Karori with her Japanese husband Yoshi and their wee Tibetan terrier called BB. Working as a marine biologist for 40 years or more has given her a big love of the ocean. Since taking up photography about 5 years ago she has turned towards her lifelong inspiration of the sea once more and set about trying to capture the tumult and intricacies of our wild Wellington coastline. “Our coast is pretty much iron bound and the towering cliffs provide a dramatic background\, whatever the conditions. We can go from balmy silver-smooth waters to tumbling crests within an hour and this makes for exciting and challenging photography.”\n\nShe is going to present her current project “Our Sea: Our Backyard” and share insights and tips about photographing the coast and its waters that she has learned on the journey so far. Mary wants you to know that she is honoured to be invited and is really excited to present her work to you  “I am aware that many WPS members are interested in the sea and photograph it themselves in a multitude of interesting ways\, and I get a lot of inspiration from what they do too”.

SUMMARY:Poppy Lekner: Experimental photographic artist
DESCRIPTION:Poppy Lekner is an experimental photographic artist with interest in alternative photographic processes. Primarily working with cameraless photography. \nCurrent work and work of the last few years has been cameraless using the sun\, the darkroom and now more recently in lockdown the moon to create images. Poppy started making cameraless work while teaching photography at Wellington HIgh School after finishing her BFA at Massey in 2007. She came across some old workbooks that used exposure of silver gelatin paper to sunlight to illustrate to students the paper’s light sensitivity- at this time she had inherited her Czech Babi’s (grandmother) books and started making a series of sungrams using these books. \nFurther series led on to experimenting with other biographical objects and scientific objects from her father’s physics lab. This year she won the Parkin drawing prize for Forward Slash her work made on a brother typewriter. She was been selected as one of 15 experimental photographic artists to show in the Hundred Heroines (London) online exhibition\, and Black & White Looking Back Looking Forward 2020 winner in the Alternative Printing category in Black and White Magazine (US). \nHer work has featured on PhotoForum\, Women in Photography NZ AU and Experimental Photofestival. \nShe works from home and uses the darkroom at Inverlochy House. \nTo see more of her work -Instagram @poppylekner
