SUMMARY:Street photography - Robert Fletcher and Holly Neill
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear from two very talented Wellington street photographers – Robert Fletcher and Holly Neill – talk about their methods and why they love street photography. \nRobert’s profile: \nNoticing the details. Moving from the UK to Wellington gave me the opportunity to explore and discover a new city and a new country. A chance to see the small details others overlook daily and walk past on their way to work; like the specific way that light will hit the brim of a hat\, the view through a doorway\, or light reflected off a window. I have spent the last four years capturing these details to show how I see the world around me. \nI had an interest in photography from an early age – my parents were big advocates – but I did not take this seriously until I started walking the streets of Wellington and discovered the thrill of capturing those events that are only there for a brief moment of time. Taking inspiration from the likes of Fan Ho and Saul Leiter\, along with more contemporary photographers like Matt Hall (@the13thsecond) and Craig Whitehead (@sixstreetunder)\, I aim to show Wellington and its people to the world through my eyes. \nSee Robert’s work on Instagram: @streetsandshadow \nHolly’s profile: \nI’m a photographer with two main focuses: wildlife and street. Street photography gives me a sense of freedom\, with a light set up and the prospect that anything around the corner could become a image. My passion for street photography began when I was trying to find a way to be creative during the working week. I started taking my camera to work every single day\, shooting on my commutes and lunch breaks regardless of the weather. I challenge myself to notice the smaller details that I wouldn’t usually pay any attention to. Having my camera on me at all times has enabled me to capture some of my favourite images. I enjoy showing a different perspective of our capital city\, and am always on the hunt for the next shot. \nSee Holly’s work at: www.hollyneillphotography.com \nDoors open at 7:00pm\, meeting starts at 7:30pm.

SUMMARY:Black and white photography – Sean Aickin
DESCRIPTION:Sean Aickin from Splendid\, a small analogue photo shop in Newtown\, will give us his take on black and white photography. \nWith a photographic father\, who had his own photo shop\, there was little doubt Sean would end up in the photographic industry. Starting out in the late 90s\, Sean has worked in various photo stores in New Zealand and Australia before spending 15 years at Wellington Photographic Supplies. As a steadfast analogue fan\, he thought it would be a good idea to open an analogue-focused photo shop and\, in September 2018\, he realised this dream. \nSplendid photographic shop is the analogue photographer’s dream shop\, stocking film from all over the world and making film photography that much easier in New Zealand. As well as starting Splendid\, Sean has been an active photographer within the music industry\, photographing bands from all over the world\, and he also loves a good street photograph. \nDoors open at 7:00pm\, meeting starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Gábor Tóth - The Wellington Urban Motorway and its photographic documentation
DESCRIPTION:Gábor’s talk will be called “The Foothills Route: the history of the Wellington Urban Motorway and its photographic documentation\, 1966 – 1976”. \nOne of the largest and most complex works of infrastructure development in Wellington’s history\, this talk uncovers the history of the Wellington motorway\, the thinking behind its origin and the controversy surrounding its construction. The talk is based around a set of photographs commissioned by the Ministry of Works documenting the building of motorway over a 10 year period. \nGábor was born and grew up in Wellington to Hungarian parents who arrived in New Zealand as refugees from the 1956 Hungarian revolution. He attended Wellington College\, Massey and Victoria Universities and lived in London for four years working for The Independent (the then-broadsheet newspaper) as photo and negative librarian as well as liaising between journalists and news photographers. Following post-graduate studies\, he worked for Radio New Zealand in their research unit\, then began working for the Wellington City Archives in 1997. After four years\, he transferred within the City Council to become the Local and NZ History Specialist for the Wellington City Libraries where he also looks after ‘special’ collections such as rare books\, manuscripts\, photographs and heritage database development. \nGábor is replacing the previously advertised speaker. \nDoors open at 7:00pm\, meeting starts at 7:30pm.

SUMMARY:Dean Hewison and Matty Warmington - Video with your SLR
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that today it is not uncommon for feature length films to be shot on DSLR/Mirrorless cameras? Is your video feature on your camera one of those features that you have never quite got around to mastering? \nThings may well be different for you after hearing our two guest speakers on 12 September. \nWe are fortunate to have two talented Wellington-based cinematographers in Dean Hewison and Matty Warmington talking about their work and how you can take the first steps along the way to unlocking your skills as a videographer. \nDean is a writer and director for film\, theatre\, television and web. He was written and directed several plays\, many of which have won awards in various festivals and competitions\, including media satire “Live at Six”\, advertising love-letter “Jingles – The Musical” and the comedic two-hander “Conversations With My Penis”. \nDean has written and directed a multitude of short films over the years\, and is a veteran of the 48HOURS short film competition\, having directed and co-written 13 short films since 2004. His team Traces of Nut were the 2013 National Champions with “The Sleeping Plot”\, with Dean winning the national award for Best Director. His 2018 duo entry (with Richard Falkner) “Master” won the Wellington Final\, and won national awards for Best Editing\, Best Script\, and Best Ultra Film. His other film writing and directing includes the feature length comedy “How to Meet Girls From a Distance”\, which was nominated for six New Zealand Film Awards including Best Director and Best Screenplay\, and winner of the Grand Prix du Jury at the Festival de Antipodes in France. Dean’s short “Judgment Tavern” was selected by Lee Tamahori for NZ’s Best in the NZIFF 2016\, and in the same year he directed the 45 minute comedy special “On the Conditions and Possibilities of Hilary Clinton Taking Me as Her Young Lover”. \nDean is also a freelance television director\, having recently directed two episodes of the New Zealand comedy hit “Wellington Paranormal”. Dean currently has three comedic feature films in development: “Tough Crowd”\, “Big Business”\, and “Everyone Dies” – the feature length expansion of his short film “Judgment Tavern”. \nMatty has over twenty years experience in producing\, directing and shooting all over New Zealand and the world. He runs Kaboose Media – a Wellington based production company that produces high quality corporate and promotional videos. He has a strong background in documentary and an artistic flair for motion graphics and animation. \nAs a cinematographer\, Matty has worked with Dean on multiple films\, commercials\, and web series\, including the 48HOURS National Champion “The Sleeping Plot”\, children’s nature web series “Wild Eyes”\, and the feature film “How to Meet Girls From a Distance”. \nDoors open at 7:00pm\, meeting starts at 7:30pm.

SUMMARY:Sean Gillespie: Documentating Wellington's Suburbs
DESCRIPTION:Sean is a Wellington based freelance writer\, photojournalist and videographer. His LinkedIn profile suggests an extremely wide range of roles\, including working in the New Zealand parliament and US Department of State. \nHe is a keen Wellingtonian who is not bothered by the slight breezes we have down here. In fact he has headed out into cyclones to record the city in action\, with the images appearing on the Spinoff website (https://thespinoff.co.nz/author/sean-gillespie/). \nIn 2014 he decided he would explore the suburbs of Wellington to see if he could capture images that reflected what was unique about them. When he started he did not realPhotoerise that he would find that there were 57 separate suburbs! \nBy using references to this project Sean is going to demonstrate that you don’t need to venture to overseas locations to create a body of work.
