A Wellington community built around photography
For more than a century, the Wellington Photographic Society has been bringing people together through a shared love of photography. From beginners picking up a camera for the first time to experienced amateurs and professionals, there’s a place for everyone at WPS.
Every year, we put together a fresh programme of talks, workshops, competitions, exhibitions and events designed to inspire, challenge and encourage photographers of all ages and experience levels. Our programme is made possible through the mahi of our volunteers and the support of local businesses and sponsors who believe in what we do.
We’re proud of our Wellington roots. Our Society is a diverse and welcoming community, and we encourage our members to explore every side of photography, from landscapes and wildlife to portraits, street photography, creative and experimental work. Over the years, WPS has helped countless photographers develop their skills, discover a lifelong passion and take their first steps towards professional careers. Some have gone on to achieve recognition both here in New Zealand and overseas.
Photography is something that can be shared across generations, and our membership reflects that. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds, creating opportunities for people to learn from one another, share ideas and enjoy photography together.
At the heart of WPS is whanaungatanga — building relationships and a sense of belonging. As a registered charity, our purpose is to promote and develop photography while supporting the photographers who make up our community. Our dedicated volunteers are the backbone of the Society, giving their time and energy to keep photography thriving in Wellington.
