SUMMARY:Clive Pigott - Alternative Printing Processes
DESCRIPTION:Clive Pigott – Alternative Printing Processes. Thursday 11th April\, Tararua Tramping Club\, 7pm \nAbout Clive:\nI’ve been making photographs since I was 12. I’m now 58. \nI am not a naturally talented photographer. My eye didn’t really improve until I was in my 40’s and only after I had adopted digital. Until then successful images were hit and miss. \nI’d say generally my images are simple but deliberate. I aim to have enough in them for the viewer to take a longer look (but then don’t we all want that?). \nI’d probably say I’ve been on a journey with photography over the years. It has definitely\, been a journey of great fun and reward\, as I have got better at converting my images into prints using alternative processes: Cyanotype (with/without botanical toning)\, 4-colour Gum bichromate\, and Anthotype. \nIn my talk I’ll tell you about these processes and why I like them\, I’ll show you some of the successes and failures (and hence why it is still a journey)\, and I’ll give you some tips for getting started.

SUMMARY:Film Night - Jos
DESCRIPTION:The Forgotten Photographer Who Saved A Town\nFor nearly 100 years the name Jos Divis was missing from histories of New Zealand photography. Now a wrong is being righted. \nSome call him the ‘inventor of the selfie’. A street photographer ahead of his time\, he pioneered techniques to capture images of ordinary people and their working lives in a way no-one else could. Imprisoned for his beliefs\, he lived his last years alone in the ghost town he helped bring to life\, his family believing him dead. \nJOS is a journey of discovery following a historian\, a photographer and a museum curator all working to give Jos Divis the recognition he deserves. \nDoors open from 7pm\, film will begin at 7.30pm\nSnacks and beverages will be provided\nAll welcome \n  \n

SUMMARY:Photography: Show and Tell
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a while since we had a good old-fashioned ‘Show and Tell’ \nIt could be prints\, a photobook\, a piece of gear that makes your life easier\, or a portfolio or website you are currently working on\, the project you are most proud of or even something you can’t work out and have been scratching your head about (we’ve all been there!). \nWhatever it is\, come along and tell us about it. There’s nothing quite like learning from and sharing with others\, so let’s make it happen! If you don’t have any images or a project to share\, your input will be welcome anyway so come along too! We’re keen to keep providing a supportive community that helps and supports other photographers. \nFor those bringing images\, feel free to bring along physical prints and/or digital (on a device such as a phone/tablet/laptop). Please bring your own device. \nSo\, come along and share your work\, projects\, inspiration or tips and tricks with us! \nPhotography Gear Sale & Swap\nWe are also making space for a small gear sale. Club members and the general public are invited to bring along any surplus camera equipment or general photography-related gear they might have and put it up for sale. \nIf successful sellers could make a small donation from their sales\, that would be great. It will help cover our costs. \nThursday 11th July | Doors open 7pm | Tararua Tramping Club

DESCRIPTION:The Annual Interclub Print Battle hosted by the Wellington Photographic Society. November 17th\, Doors open 12pm\, at the Tararua Tramping Club\, 4 Moncrieff St\, Mount Cook\, Wellington. \nThe Wellington Interclub Print Battle is an annual competition between the photographic clubs in the greater Wellington area that are affiliated to the Photographic Society of New Zealand. In the last couple of years\, an invitation has been extended to clubs further afield\, to boost the number of clubs participating. \n \nThe clubs participating in the 2024 competition are: \n\nWellington Photographic Society\nJohnsonville Camera Club\nPorirua Photography Club\nKapiti Coast Photographic Society\nWhanganui Camera Club\n\nHere are the topics for 2024.\nWe are happy to provide definitions of any subjects \n\nMinimalist\nTeal & Orange\nReflective\nMultiple Exposure\nConservation\nPareidolia: Seeing faces in Nature/Built Environment\nIn Miniature\nSuper Ordinary Life\nThe Sea\nShapes & Patterns\n\nThe competition has ten rounds\, each with a different topic. The participating clubs are asked to select one image for each topic from the work of their members to be their entry for that round. \nFor each round\, each club brings up their image for that topic and places it on the print stand for judging. The judge is asked to give a brief comment about each image and then rank the entries in order. The first placed print is awarded one point\, the second placed print is awarded two points\, and so on. At the end of the competition\, the club with the lowest cumulative score over the ten rounds is declared the winner and is presented with a trophy\, which was donated by the Kapiti Coast Photographic Society in 2008. \nThere is also the Stella Daniell Award presented to the individual photographer for the best abstract image across all the rounds\, as selected by the judge. The award is named in memory of Stella Daniell\, who was a member of both the Wellington Photographic Society and the Karori Camera Club and was known for her abstract images. \nWhere do you send submissions? comms@wps.org.nz\nWhat’s the deadline? October 24th 2024. This will give us time to select\, notify successful entrants\, format\, request alterations\, print\, and matt. \nWhat are the dimensions/size? \n\nFor the purposes of selection\, please send digital images only but let us know if you have a print/matted version of the image available.\n6mb Max at full resolution. We will resize the image to the size required for the competition but we will let you know if you need to bump up the resolution.\n\nNaming the image file? \n\nThis is VERY IMPORTANT. This helps us keep things organised.\nInterclub_Category_LastNameFirstName_Title\nI.e.Interclub_TheSea_BobJohn_OhNoABear\n\nWe advise avoiding sending any images from recent workshops\, PSNZ or otherwise. SUMMARY:Astrophotography for beginners with Keith Molloy
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting a tutorial on astrophotography. This will be run by the local astrophotographer Keith Molloy. \nThe cost will be $80 for members of the general public and $60 for Wellington Photographic Society members. Numbers are limited to 35 so get in quick. \nThe format for the day will be an indoor tutorial run by Keith followed by a practical session on the south coast that evening. The level will be targeted at both beginners and those looking to improve their skills. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about astrophotography. \nWe will have an alternate day for the practical session if the weather is not playing ball on the day. \nIf you want to know more about Keith then here is some information: \nI first took up photography about 30 years ago but became interested in astrophotography about 7 years ago. \nI enjoy photographing the Wellington region at night but I also get out to shoot the dark skies in the Wairarapa and further afield whenever I can. I love finding new interesting foregrounds to feature along with the night skies. \nI set up the Wellington Night Shooters Facebook group in 2021 which runs night photography meetups throughout the year and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. I also sell astrophotography via my own website and other photography work on Truestock. \nFind examples of Keith’s work at:\ninstagram.com/keithmolloy_photography\nfacebook.com/keithmolloyphotography

SUMMARY:Phil Greig - Cinema\, Colour Grading & Digitisation
DESCRIPTION:Phil was born in Nelson\, New Zealand. Initially involved in arts\, music\, electronics and large scale stage productions he began his career in the Cinema Industry as a projectionist and technician. He moved on to work as a technical manager for some of New Zealands’ largest cinema chains before moving into the Film production industry in the late 1990’s. \nPhil had a number of years working for Oscar-winning Director/ Producer\, Peter Jackson as a Post Production film lab Technician\, Digital Intermediate specialist and projectionist before getting inspired to develop his own projects. Phil went on to develop R&D digital strategies\, working at the NZ film Archive. He now works full time as a producer\, film restorer/ editor and specialist audio and video digital technician\, in New Zealand’s vibrant film and entertainment industry. \nA New Zealand based professional photographer & Post Production technician. \nI started shooting weddings and doing modelling portfolios when I was 17. I lived in a small town & outgrew it quickly. Fortunately- I became a skilled cinema projectionist & with the sudden expansion of cinemas in the 90’s – along with my camera – I found myself moving around New Zealand – ending up in Wellington – just as ‘Lord of the Rings’ began production. \nAfter projecting over 20 thousand films – I took a leap of faith- & found myself working in the studios projection rooms and cutting takes on Hollywood films. I eventually became a VFX supervisor in an Oscar-winning team & an expert 35mm film colorist. \nBut I often used to say to people- I’m only good at this- because I learnt to take photos and develop them myself when I was 15. Every principal I was using – came from the camera lens or the dark room- experimenting over and over until I got it right. \nI noticed that the film industry was affecting (& improving) the way I was taking photos. Cinema requires drama or some sort of language in every frame. I felt the same should be applied to my photographs. While continuing to ‘Master Movies’ in my world class editing suite- I needed to separate my love of photography – and give it room to breathe on its own. \nIn 2017 I came up with the idea to create ‘PhilmHaus’ & the business was launched in early 2019.
