SUMMARY:Sport Photography Meetup - Track Cycling
DESCRIPTION:Track cycling is ideal\, as you have ‘captive’ subjects who keep going past you with some regularity\, and you can try all manner of techniques. \nYou can also leave bags etc in the middle of the park. SUMMARY:Zealandia Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Tucked up over the city of Wellington is Zealandia\, an ecosanctuary reminiscent of the days before humans arrived in New Zealand. \n\nZealandia is a great place to photograph more than just birds – there are invertebrates\, plants\, fungi\, and tuatara too (so you don’t need a huge long lens if you don’t have one). It’s spring at the moment so there should be some breeding displays going on\, and you might even spot some birds collecting food to feed hungry chicks!\n\n\n\nKeep in mind\, we do not have an official Zealandia guide for this meet-up\, but we do have a staff member who knows the sanctuary quite well  \nPlease let us know if you can make this meet-up as we need to determine if we have enough Zealandia members attending to get everyone in at half-price. If you are a Zealandia member\, let us know at comms@wps.org.nz. \nWe will meet in the foyer at 9am on Sunday 23 October. Zealandia (wildlife sanctuary)\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Jane Dunn - Forensic Photography
DESCRIPTION:The speaker we have on November 24th is Jane Dunn\, a forensic photographer with the New Zealand Police. This will be a fascinating talk about a form of photography as record-keeping. Jane has introduced herself in the bio below. \nMy Name is Jane Dunn and I am in my 17th year of being a police officer. I have been a full-time forensic photographer for 9 years. I am very passionate about the work that we do and even though it is not work that we can often share it is a very important role within the police. We have about 46 full-time forensic photographers nationally & in Wellington\, we have 5 full-time. We are all police constables. \nI have fallen in love with Police Dog Photography since we started the police dog calendar. So if I am not at work you can most likely find me with a police dog or puppy coming up with some crazy ideas. I am also passionate about the dog section and the work that the dogs and the handlers do & I love capturing the relationship & bond between dog and handler. \nNovember 24th\, Tararua Tramping Club\, Doors open 7pm

SUMMARY:Through the Viewfinder: Insightful Stories from New Zealand's Defence Force Photographers
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for an awesome presentation featuring two incredibly talented photographers from the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF). These two photographers have some serious skills behind the camera\, and they’re here to give us a sneak peek into their world. We’re talking about capturing jaw-dropping action shots\, heartfelt moments\, and everything in between. From training exercises to real-life missions\, they’ve been right there in the thick of it all. \nSo\, buckle up and prepare to be blown away as they share their stories\, show off their incredible images\, and give us a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be an NZDF photographer. It’s going to be an epic ride\, folks! \nRachel\nCorporal Rachel Pugh first heard about the role of a military photographer when she was at high school and immediately discarded the idea as being way too unrealistic. Instead\, she studied a Bachelors of Fine Arts majoring in photography\, and it wasn’t until her final year of study that she began to seriously consider applying for the role anyway. \nNow she has been in service for four years and deployed to multiple countries across the Pacific following NZDF units from exercise to operation. Her work has been featured in national and international publications\, as well as occasionally going viral on Reddit. In 2022 she took home third place in the Asia Pacific Photography Awards in Advertising and Editorial and was a shortlist in the 2021 Voyager Media Awards for best cover image of a magazine. \nBased in Ohakea\, her particular passion is air-to-air photography\, working in and around the helicopter squadrons and trying not to fall out the side of the aircraft. \nNaomi\nCorporal Naomi James is a New Zealand Defence Force photographer working out of Base Ohakea in the mighty Manawatu. Having been in service for just over 6 ½ years\, Naomi has been behind the lens throughout her entire military career. Brought up in the United Kingdom\, her passion for photography was sparked in college which led her to study a Bachelor of Arts in Photography before moving to NZ at the end of 2015 as a creative post-graduate. \nAs a photographer\, Naomi enjoys the variety of photographic skills and challenges that comes with visually documenting military exercises and operations. She has participated in activities with numerous units and services; from capturing commemorative ceremonial events in Europe\, to sailing the seas in the Pacific\, and disaster relief in Australia. Her work has been published in digital and hard print domestically and abroad. \nA highlight of her career was capturing the Anzac Day flypast image of Biggin Hill’s Historic Aircraft Centre’s Spitfire. This particular image was featured in the NZ Herald as photo of the week as well as achieving a finalist spot in the Asia Pacific Photography Awards in 2022.
