SUMMARY:From Boots to Dragons
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a timed photographic adventure from the heights of Mount Victoria to a legendary dragon’s lair. \nBeginning at the Tararua Tramping Club\, we’ll stroll downhill along footpaths with sweeping harbour views\, colourful houses\, heritage buildings\, and plenty of Wellington character. Along the way\, you’ll tackle creative\, slightly cryptic photo challenges designed to spark imagination rather than speed. \nNo technical expertise required — just a camera (or phone)\, comfortable shoes (the route will cover 2-3 kms\, mostly downhill)\, and a sense of fun. \nAdventure awaits… and the dragon guards the finish line at the Welsh Dragon Bar. There you can finish with your chosen molten gold refreshment. \nThursday 23rd of February: Doors 7pm\, Meeting Starts 7.30pm

SUMMARY:Simon Woolf - Wellington Moods
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to welcome Simon Woolf\, as our special guest speaker at the next Wellington Photographic Society meeting. \nSimon is one of New Zealand’s most respected and experienced photographers — he has earned multiple national and international qualifications and awards\, and has exhibited and judged widely both in Aotearoa and overseas. Simon’s lifelong dedication to photography has also seen him play significant roles in photographic organisations and education in New Zealand. \nPhotography is in Simon’s blood. He carries on the family legacy begun by his father\, Ronald Woolf\, who acquired one of Wellington’s oldest photographic studios (originally Spencer Digby\, established 1934) in 1960 and built it into one of the capital’s best-known and most esteemed businesses. Over decades\, Ron’s work — and now Simon’s continuing vision — has documented countless people\, places\, and milestones throughout Wellington and beyond. \nSimon also has a long and special history with the Wellington Photographic Society\, holding Life Membership\, and engaging with the club through presentations\, workshops\, and judging over many years. \nHis latest project is his beautiful new photography book\, Wellington Moods — a curated collection of his favourite black-and-white images celebrating the city’s character\, light\, landscapes\, and people. The book captures Wellington in all its moods. \nPlease join us for what promises to be an inspiring evening as Simon shares his passion\, stories\, and photographic insight. \nThursday March 12th\, Tararua Tramping Club\, 4 Moncrieff St\, Doors open 7pm\, Members of the public are welcome to attend. Koha appreciated but not complusory.

SUMMARY:Image Critique: Bring your own print
DESCRIPTION:Do you have any photographs that you would like feedback on? Or maybe you just can’t put your finger on what might make the image better? \nYou may bring in up to five photographs for critique; they can be possible competition entries or anything else you want input on. This is a great chance to run your work past others for feedback on how you can improve\, and to discuss your work with other photographers at the end of the evening. \nYou can bring digital photos on your own device or physical prints. If bringing prints we suggest at least 8×12 size so that people can view details. The images do not need to be mounted or framed\, but can be. Feedback will be anonymous during the critique and there will be an opportunity later in the evening to discuss your image with others if you would like to. \nYou can have up to five photographs per person in print or on a device (laptop or tablet). You don’t need to bring any photographs to take part\, you’re more than welcome to simply provide feedback to others or simply catch-up with other photographers. \nDon’t be afraid to participate – you do not need to be a member to take part in this meeting\, whether receiving feedback or just providing some. \nIf you are unable to bring along a digital copy on your own device\, then email your images to comms@wps.org.nz and we will put your image on the projector. We cannot guarantee feedback for these images\, but we will do our best. \nMembers of the public are welcome to attend\, tea and biscuits will be provided. \n\nDate: Thursday 9th July\nTime: Doors open from 7pm\, critique will begin at 7.30pm\nLocation: 4 Moncrieff Street\, Mt Victoria\n\nDigital Copies \nFor those wanting to bring digital images rather than prints on Thursday. In order to be able to critique digital images\, we will need each person to set up their images in a folder on their device. The other members will view the images on that device. \nEach image will need to be titled – just numbers are fine as we just need to be able to identify each one for the feedback. Having the images in a separate folder means people can switch between just those images easily. You are also welcome to set up a slideshow or similar (please allow enough time for each image to be fully digested).

SUMMARY:Movie Night: In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter
DESCRIPTION:In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter \nSaul Leiter could have been lauded as a great pioneer of color photography (his fashion work was published in Harper’s Bazaar and Esquire)\, but was never driven by the lure of success. Instead he preferred to drink coffee and photograph in his own way\, amassing an archive of beautiful work that is now piled high in his New York City apartment. \n“In No Great Hurry floats some of [Leiter’s] most ethereal\, lustrous images\, soft\, layered scenes that glow with a watercolor’s warmth\, sharp departures from the gritty cityscapes of his contemporaries. His best work seems both of the moment and timeless.” \nDoors open from 7pm and the movie will start at 7.15pm. Entry is free and tea\, coffee and free popcorn will be available! \nFor more information about the documentary\, click here:\nIn No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter \nThursday August 13th – Doors 7pm\, Tararua Tramping Club\nMembers of the public are welcome to attend\, tea and biscuits will be provided.

SUMMARY:Annual Exhibition 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Wellington Photographic Society’s annual exhibition is a highlight of our year\, bringing together the creative work of our members and sharing it with the wider public. For us\, it’s not just a chance to hang photographs on the wall – it’s an opportunity to celebrate the art of photography\, showcase the talent within our community\, and invite others to discover what makes photography such an inspiring and accessible pursuit. \nThis year’s exhibition offers a diverse collection of images captured both close to home and further afield. You’ll see photographs from all around the world – landscapes\, portraits\, street scenes\, and wildlife – but the heart of the exhibition is firmly rooted in Wellington. Our members have drawn inspiration from the beauty and variety of our own backyard: dramatic coastlines\, majestic mountains\, vibrant cities\, and the small\, fleeting details that make life unique. \nWe are also proud to display images created during our group meet-ups\, workshops\, and learning sessions. These gatherings are at the heart of what we do as a society\, offering members the chance to connect\, experiment\, and grow their photographic skills in a supportive and friendly environment. The exhibition is therefore more than just a showcase of individual work – it’s a reflection of the shared learning\, encouragement\, and passion that our community thrives on. \nVisitors can expect to see a wide range of styles and techniques\, from classic black-and-white to bold digital artistry. Whether you are a seasoned photographer\, someone with a casual interest in the medium\, or simply curious to see the world through a different lens\, there will be something here to inspire you. \nOpening Night: 5th October\, 7pm (private event\, by invitation only)\nPublic Viewing: 6th October onwards\nOpening Hours: 10am – 6pm most days\, extended to 8pm on Friday/Saturday \nWe warmly invite you to join us\, explore the exhibition\, and experience the world as seen through the eyes of our members. Who knows – you may even feel inspired to pick up a camera yourself and consider becoming part of the Wellington Photographic Society. \nOpening night\nMonday\, 5th October | Time 7pm | Thistle Hall\, 293 Cuba St\, Te Aro\nPlease come and join us to celebrate the creative photos of your fellow club members and yourself – family and friends are welcome. Finger food and refreshments will be available. \nGallery roster\nWe are looking to establish a roster of volunteers to man the gallery during weekday afternoons and during the weekends. Please contact the committee via comms@wps.org.nz if you can volunteer.
