Routes

  • There are a couple of routes to choose from the starting point:
  • Bolton Cemetery is right by the starting point and leads you to the Terrace
  • The Sculpture walk is just up the hill and leads you up past the Observatory to the Cable Car and the top of the gardens
  • Finally there is the route through the rose garden, up to the fragrant garden and over to the main garden

We will meet afterward at Sprig & Fern from 5pm to catch up and share some images with other photographers.

Topics

  • Animal escapades: Animals like to live their own life – what are they doing when we aren’t looking?
  • Abstract instances: Get creative and photograph abstract patterns, textures, or shapes that catch your eye, encouraging viewers to interpret and appreciate the artistry in everyday objects
  • Close encounters of the Grass kind: Shoot from the hip? Try shooting from the shoe. Capture an image that shows us the world from ground level.
  • Nothing beats a good book: Find a subject who is reading a physical book or magazine or menu (or gravestone). Sorry, no kindles, tablets, laptops, or phones.
  • A little break: When Wellington is having one of its good days, being a photographer can be thirsty work. Treat yourself to a drink and take a snap of your beverage before you get back to work.
  • Show the passage of time: Experiment with capturing motion, such as flowing water, moving vehicles, or people in action, freezing or blurring the movement to convey a sense of energy.
  • Reflections: Experiment with windows, mirrors or reflective surfaces with the additional challenge of keeping the photographer and camera out of the image.
  • Textures: Bumpy, mossy, smooth…y. Show us the textures of Wellington.
  • The colour Pink: Give us your pinkest image yet.
  • Minimalism: Embrace the beauty of simplicity by capturing minimalistic photos that focus on clean lines, empty spaces, and a sense of tranquility.
  • Bonus! The Rocky Balboa: You’ve reached the end of the hunt. Celebrate your efforts with a celebratory shot worthy of the (Fictional) boxing great himself. Photo must include: Stairs or steps; back to camera; both hands in the air

Scavenger Hunt Game Rules

  • Only images captured during the period of the hunt (2.30 pm – 5pm) will count. No previously (or subsequently) captured images will be allowed.
  • You can take part as a team or an individual
  • Do not take a photo of two items together. Each item must be in a separate picture.
  • The play area is limited to the botanical gardens and the immediate surrounds (ie cemetery, Tinakori Rd etc.
  • Latecomers may enter if they wish.
  • There are no age limits or age restrictions – all ages are welcome! If children participate in your scavenger hunt, please ensure they are always supervised.
  • Exercise common courtesy when interacting with the public.
  • Do not enter private property without permission.
  • Obey the law at all times.
  • Photos are straight out of camera, no editing, or cropping (other than B&W)
  • Interpret the list as you wish, just try to take the images in a creative way, think outside the box. Think angle, lighting, camera settings etc
  • You don’t have to complete each subject, so don’t rush, just take your time to think about each subject.
  • Play fair. Remember it’s all in good fun and there is no need to ruin someone’s good time.
  • The decision of the judge(s) is final.

Have fun!
